Against the Grain Building & Renovating is a custom builder delivering new builds, renovations, extensions and heritage restorations in the Blue Mountains. For over 15 years the team has built distinctive homes suited to Blue Mountains living, across Leura, Katoomba, Blackheath and Wentworth Falls.

Every project is led by David Spees, Director and licensed master builder (Lic. 225942C) and a member of the Master Builders Association NSW. The team takes a collaborative approach, working with architects or draftspeople to ensure design and construction are aligned from the start. Clients receive thorough quotes, clear timeframes and a fully managed construction process, delivered by an established team.

Against the Grain’s work has been recognised for craftsmanship and build quality. Coryong, a heritage restoration in Leura, won the MBA NSW 2025 Excellence in Housing Award for House Restorations & Additions ($1m–$1.5m). Parana, also in Leura, won Best Use of Timber at the 2026 MBA NSW Western Regions Excellence in Building Awards.
