Energy Efficient Cottage Addition

BLACKHEATH, BLUE MOUNTAINS

Against the Grain completed this energy efficient cottage addition, designed by Anderson Architecture. Referencing the Australian ‘rural shed’, the bushfire resistant passive design achieved an 8-star BERS Pro thermal rating, and transformed the once cold Mountains cottage into a comfortable, energy efficient retreat.

The addition includes two bedrooms, ensuite, separate bathroom, and living area. The existing cottage cladding was stripped back and reinsulated as part of the works, lifting the thermal performance of the original structure to match the new build. The new structure features an insulated slab concrete floor with hydronic heating, with additional hydronic radiators were installed in the existing cottage.

Against the Grain's Windows & Doors team manufactured custom, double glazed windows and doors in solid blackbutt, with architectural features such as low window sills to allow  winter sun to penetrate and be absorbed by the concrete floors.
